Since this little section on the Works of God is so varied, I have a couple of different book recommendations depending on where we’re looking. This was originally 4 Sunday School lessons, so I’ll give you 4 books.
On the Doctrine of Inseparable Operations - or How God Works, I found Matthew Barrett’s Simply Trinity to be very helpful and clarifying. That said, when I was studying for that lesson, Beholding the Triune God was not yet published. It is now - and it’s sitting on my desk waiting to be read. So, TBD on if my recommendation changes.
On Creation, I appreciate Gavin Ortlund’s Retrieving Augustine’s Doctrine of Creation. It helps to cut through the culture wars and show the biblical emphasis - especially since it focuses on Augustine, who lived over 1,000 years before Darwin.
On Providence, it’s massive (750 pp), but I can’t recommend anything better than John Piper’s Providence. It has a little bit of everything - all aimed toward the praise of God.
On Redemption and Predestination, I was pleasantly surprised by Andrew Naselli’s Predestination: An Introduction. This series is continually excellent, but I was surprised at how practical and encouraging this particular book was.
